Start Sketching (Again)

Start Sketching (Again)

I recently started sketching again which is a pretty big deal. "Did you ever stop?" Actually, I did!

When you're just drawing for yourself, it's easier to get lost and and follow wherever the whim takes you. No expectations, no one looking over your shoulder, no assigned market value to think about. Just you and this portal to a world all your own.

I used to draw all the time, and then over the years as it became a whole job, the doodling decreased and being aware of an audience became a bigger factor. It's a blessing to get to share what you're working on with interested friends online and offline, and still we have the ages-old challenge of "dancing like nobody's watching." The growth of social media of course has brought a hyper awareness, and that's what we have to intentionally ignore to get the most genuine and focused "dancing."

Last year, after a big burnout and break, I questioned if all my creativity was going to leave me for good. It sure seemed like that's where I was headed for while. (That's when you know you need to reach out to your friends.) My fellow illustrators were a huge help--they offered understanding and suggestions on new things to try.

It was time to revive my sketching habit, and that was going to take introducing my tired self to new materials... which eventually sparked some real love for drawing again.
